Open letter to Dayton defenders

Homeless.
Homeless.

Here is the text of an e-mail i never sent to the editors of the Dayton Daily News and some other locals. For whatever reason, it was abandoned. This was concerning a recent Forbes article asserting Dayton, among several other Ohio cities, was among the top ten fastest dying cities in America. Our local media, far from investigating the underlying reasons why we should be so included, instead insisted on defending our [un]fair city, claiming that Dayton wasn’t really dying – just changing.

You know what else is a change? Death.

(Note: this is not very well written and equally badly edited. As i’ve said, it never got beyond an early stage.)

John McCain announces VP in Dayton

John McCain wants to eat you.
John McCain wants to eat you.

So today at the Wright State University‘s Nutter Center, Republican presidential hopeful John McCain announced his running mate. This, in Dayton, Ohio, the worst, dyingest city on the face of the earth.

His running mate? Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. The one who hates women, the environment, and gay rights (but loves guns and death)? Yes, that one.

So, to recap: he’s chosen Dayton, Ohio – the new Flint, Michigan – to announce his female running mate.

Well played, sir. Well played. The worst thing is that he’s actually got me a little shaken, and i’d bet a lot of other Democrats are similarly rattled. Never mind that we’ll get over it by the end of the weekend and continue to fight, harder than ever, against this debased, America world-hating pair of depraved sickos.

Look, the facts are in. McCain not only admitted on national television that he doesn’t understand economics, but he doesn’t even know how to count (for the record, Mr. McCain, we lost count of your houses too). He believes that you’re still “middle class” until you’ve hit five million dollars. He’s missed many votes while a Senator during his campaign. Numbers is not this guy’s strong suit. And you know what? I want a president who can count. It is certain that the job of President of the United States of America requires this particular skill.

He thinks Iraq is safe now. Uh… yeah. Not really.

Much of his top campaign staff were lobbyists, which kind of defeats the whole reform thing.

Need one more nail? How’s this one… you could pierce hardened steel with it in one lethargic, half-assed whack.

As for Palin… well, she wants kids to be taught that Dinosaurs and Jesus were contemporaries, and she fired a guy because he wouldn’t fire a guy who was divorcing her sister. Alaska was one of the first states in the union to ban same-sex marriage, ten years ago (before her governorship – but she supported it). Her husband works for BP. And she wants Alaska drilled… so… hard. I think these things speak for themselves.

So if you’re on the line about who to vote for, think about these things, then think a little bit more about them. Then do the right thing and vote who you believe has the better chance of not running our nation into the ground with endless, zillion-dollar wars and imprudent corporate kickbacks, who probably won’t be shipping our entire economy, including our very jobs, wholesale, overseas, and who probably has a better-rounded and fresher, more insightful view of the world around him. And who, in merely becoming our next President of the United States of America, will change the world we live in, in meaningful and positive ways.

Ben Stein: apparently, biggest idiot ever

Ben Stein, who we no doubt all know and love from his appearances on Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Win Ben Stein’s Money, has made a little movie. It’s called Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (my thoughts exactly), and it’s a cute little rickroll of an adventure flick with Pro-Nazi Chuck Darwin leading the hoary brigades on a fell mission of genocide and eugenics. Only problem is, it’s a big fat fart-sucking lie. Unfortunately for Mister Stein, he got all of his facts wrong. Well, nearly all, as the credits (both opening and closing) do appear to be accurate.

Here, then, is Scientific American’s John Rennie and Steve Mirsky, reporting on the pitiful, outright lies perpetrated in this ridiculous movie.

The Highest Cost of War

If i were living in a video game, i would probably do video game things: senseless slaughter, reckless driving, and generally causing mayhem. It’s sure as hell fun in a video game.

I’d probably have a real itchy trigger finger; blowing character’s heads clean off would cause me to ceaselessly cackle as i wheel about looking for more victims, and more nastiness to get into.

Soldiers, however, do not live in video games. They kill real people. Actual human beings, with lives and families and friends and day jobs – be they evildoers or just innocent civilians, caught in the line of fire. Sometimes, though, things go wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong.

Frankly, it’s getting a little tedious, hearing and reading about all the civilian deaths in Iraq. It has been going on for a long time, after all.

That’s why i put off reading this The Nation piece (alt.link.print) for about a week before i got around to reading it.

The Iraq War is a vast and complicated enterprise… Fighting in densely populated urban areas has led to the indiscriminate use of force and the deaths at the hands of occupation troops of thousands of innocents.

I can not and will not blame soldiers en masse or individually. It’s a real bad situation over there, and we need to get those guys out of there as quickly as we possibly can, before more soldiers crack under pressure and bring the whole damn thing down.

It’s ok to be against the war and NOT spit on returning soldiers. That kind of folly is for idiot hippies with misguided frustration. These guys need a lot of help, from many different angles. War does terrible things to a man’s soul. But we must have hope that these inner demons can be defeated, every last one of them, for every last soldier who was there and saw bad things happen.

The bottom line: we’ve gotta get out of that place.

In the four long years of the war, the mounting civilian casualties have already taken a heavy toll–both on the Iraqi people and on the US servicemembers who have witnessed, or caused, their suffering. Iraqi physicians… published a study late last year… that estimated that 601,000 civilians have died since the March 2003 invasion… [They] found that coalition forces were responsible for 31 percent of these violent deaths, an estimate they said could be “conservative,” since “deaths were not classified as being due to coalition forces if households had any uncertainty about the responsible party.”

“Just the carnage, all the blown-up civilians, blown-up bodies that I saw,” Specialist [Jeff] Englehart said. “I just–I started thinking, like, Why? What was this for?”

“It just gets frustrating,” Specialist [Garett] Reppenhagen said. “Instead of blaming your own command for putting you there in that situation, you start blaming the Iraqi people…. So it’s a constant psychological battle to try to, you know, keep–to stay humane.”

And Now, the Real Work Begins

The races are over, and it looks like Democrats won all over the place, including quite a few governorships. That’s great, but let’s not get lazy over it. There is a lot of foulness to undo, and that’s going to take a lot of work.

Democrats, don’t break your arms patting yourselves on the back. And Republicans: think about what your party has done to deserve such remorseless spite.

I propose we start right away, to:

  1. Get out men and women the hell out of Iraq (after quickly tidying up as best we can)
  2. Try to repair damaged relations across the globe
  3. Ban religion from government
  4. Ban religion from public schools (get ID, aka Creationism, out of the classroom!)
  5. Funding science, esp. stem-cell research
  6. Amending the Constitution to clarify and equalize gay rights by law forever
  7. Take down that damn wall across the southern border
  8. Make the United States a place of Free Thought
  9. Ban spying programs focusing on U.S. citizens
  10. Encourage skeptical inquiry
  11. Start welcoming immigrants again

Personally, I’m very relieved to know that the many long years of iron-fisted Republican rule (Governor, Senate, and House) are over for people in my neck of the woods!

Marijuana vs. Alzheimer’s: FIGHT!!

Marijuana May Slow Alzheimer’s

THC, the key compound in marijuana… blocks the formation of brain-clogging Alzheimer‘s plaques better than current Alzheimer’s drugs.

Janda’s team found that THC blocks an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase, which speeds the formation of amyloid plaque in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Alzheimer’s drugs Aricept and Cognex work by blocking acetylcholinesterase. When tested at double the concentration of THC, Aricept blocked plaque formation only 22% as well as THC, and Cognex blocked plaque formation only 7% as well as THC.

I’m not a marijuana smoker, but I do believe that it is just plain stupid to maintain its currently illegal status. We smoke cigarettes, which do nothing for us but kill us in the end, or at least reduce our life span; we drink alcohol, which makes us stupid and often violent, impairs our reflexes, and causes cirrhosis of the liver. Cannabis has shown time and time again that it is a valuable plant which should absolutely be legalized. Having had a great grandfather who had Alzheimer’s, I’ve seen first-hand what a truly horrifying thing that disease is (note: not “can be,” it simply “is”). If there’s a better-than-with-current-drugs chance that I may be able to stave off the potential onslaught of a slow, mind-reducing, soul-killing, life-crushing disease like that, I may just start toking myself. Better yet, I may start eating the stuff. Trust me, there are very few things worse than dying over a period of several years from a disease which eventually completely eradicates all memory and personality from a human being’s life.

Screw glaucoma (which I may one day develop as well), I want to see more research on this!

Video evidence of PRC soldiers killing Tibetan pilgrims

ProTV Video, a Romanian private TV station, has a video of soldiers of the People’s Republic of China actually killing unarmed, harmless Tibetan refugees trekking through the snow on a pilgrimmage to see the Dalai Lama.

Who will stand up to this brutality? Who will make the PRC pay for their numerous despicable crimes against humanity?

Brainlessness at Reuters

Brainless: The Lies and Lunacy of Ann CoulterJoe Maguire lost his job at Reuters for writing a book about Ann Coulter. The book is called Brainless: The Lies and Lunacy of Ann Coulter.

Reuters confirmed that Mr. Maguire was granted conditional approval to write his book on Ms. Coulter… When asked what changed once the book was ready, a company statement pointed to Reuters’ principles of “integrity, independence and freedom from bias.”

So what is all this talk about Liberal media? And before you point out that Mr. Maguire’s book may or may not be left of the dial, a book is one thing, but news is another thing entirely. By firing a guy for pointing out that Ann Coulter is – duh! – a mindless raving lunatic (and doing so in a perfectly legitimate venue), they are effectively supporting biased journalism of a far worse kind than that which could have ever conceivably come from Mr. Maguire himself.

And anyway, if pointing out that the Emperor* is wearing no clothes** makes you a traitor, then does that make unbiased journalists insurgents?

* 1 Coulter; or, 2 mainstream media in general
** 1 is a blathering idiot; or, 2 has no business presenting a blathering idiot’s foolish, inane lies as the truth

Global Warming Heats Up

Earth’s Temperatures Near Million-Year High

I know at least one moron who says that global warming isn’t real, and another who claims that humans bear no blame and therefore have no responsibility to fix the problem.

People who turn a blind eye to the coming age of fire will find themselves in hot water soon enough. If we don’t reduce carbon emissions drastically and quickly, we won’t have the opportunity to live to see what we humans could have accomplished as a civilization. We will fail and we will die out and humanity (and other forms of walking, flying, crawling, and swimming meat) will be extinct if action is not taken. This is a looming catastrophe, and history shows that catastrophies do not magically fix themselves.

Michael Chertoff wants to kill you and eat your babies

Michael ChertoffHomeland Security Secretary (and Skeletor imposter*) Michael Chertoff, presumably issuing a sweeping indictment of all thought-criminals everywhere:

Clearly, at the end of the day, we’ve got to eliminate that pool of people who are susceptible to becoming killers.” (Spoken at around 7:20 on the stream’s timeline; emphasis mine.)

Possible translation?:

Are there any queers in the theater tonight? Get them up against the wall!
There’s one in the spotlight, he don’t look right to me! Get him up against the wall!
That one looks Jewish! And that one’s a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There’s one smoking a joint, and another with spots!
If I had my way, I’d have all of you shot!

(Roger Waters, “In the Flesh”)

Pre-Crime, anyone?

* doesn’t he remind you of Senator Palpatine, just before he becomes the evil Emperor? I tell you, Michael Chertoff will likewise reveal himself to be Skeletor one dark day….

Denying reality in Washington

Global warming is all in our minds. Also an apparent figment of our imagination: more than 100 people (so far) who have died as a direct cause of the current heat wave sweeping California.

While NASA has actually removed the phrase “to understand and protect our home planet” from its mission statement, an obvious sign that the idiotic monkey-hear, monkey-repeat global-warming deniers in Washington have them under their ridiculously fat thumbs, they’ve also been cutting or delaying programs intended to figure this climate change thing out.

So, has the politicization of science gone from merely hurting children by denying the obvious reality of evolution to actually killing people by denying the obvious reality of the global warming catastrophe?

So who’s on the side of citizenry, if our government wants to roll over and play stupid while we roast in the ever-increasing temperatures that are currently making our little planet a little less inhabitable each day? (Certainly not Republicans, who defiantly show their disgust with the poor by continually voting not to increase the minimum wage, all the while voting to give themselves raises and give tax cuts to the poor rich people in this country.)

What’s the real deal here, then? Is the U.S. government trying to enslave its own people by creating an environment where we have no recourse or protection from calamity without paying? Has America finally been turned over to Big Business? Where has all this incredible ignorance come from, and why is it actively trying to take us back to the Dark Ages, when common people were literally at the mercy of all-powerful tyrants? And how is it that We, the People, are actually letting this happen to us?

National Film Board of Canada: 50 animated shorts – excellent stuff!

Dr. Miracles – short film. Completely juvenile, and hilarious. ER gone badly weird.

This Flash “mind reader” seems spooky at first – until you figure out how it works (but do try it first, following the site’s instructions): Notice that the symbols repeat. Also notice how one number may have different symbols when you repeat the process. Then, notice that you can’t just pick a symbol, you HAVE to do the math. NOW… try this: Do the math for 5 different numbers. Do you see a pattern? They’ll all be the same symbol! So no matter what number you pick, if you do the math and pick the correct symbol, it will ALWAYS be right!

Mazen Kerboj, musician and artist, blogs from ground zero in Lebanon. Check out his improv piece, Starry Night, during which you can hear bombs and air $raid$ sirens in the background. Beautiful and unsettling, all at once. Read his blog and pass it along. Chilling. I hope that he stays safe. He seems like a good man. He says things like:

“we know you are with us. we know you are seeing us. we know you hear the fucking bombs we are hearing. we know you worry for us. but don’t. because you know we are tough guys. you know that we’ll [survive?] this shit. you know that we survived massacre and we’ll do it again today. you know we’ll see each other soon. keep in touch and stay with us.”

People get ready: all this Middle East violence is giving the End-Timers a serious hard-on for the Rapture. A sicker bunch of fuckwits probably do not exist. Zealots are fools. It is religious zeal that has got the world into the mess that it’s in now. How do you spell worldwide suicide? Z-E-A-L-O-T-R-Y.

Zealots of the world: fuck you. I do hope that you all die the vainglorious deaths that you ridiculous, ignorant fools are all hoping for. So GO APESHIT FOR JESUS/MOSES/MUHAMMED! Kill each other to bloody, pulpy fucking smithereens and let the rest of us get on with our futures!
