As Long as There is Death, There is Hope

Happy Deathday, Brother Theodore.

Brother Theodore was imprisoned by Nazis at Dachau. He played chess (a game he excelled at so profoundly that he once beat thirty fucking Stanford professors simultaneously – yes, read that again) with Albert Einstein, who helped him emigrate to the United States, where he would eventually become a cult hero with his uniquely surreal gallows humor and eccentric monologues, along with acting as Gollum in the classic Rankin/Bass animated feature The Hobbit, and in such movies as The Last Unicorn and the Tom Hanks vehicle The ‘Burbs. He was a staple of the late-night talk shows in the 1970s and 1980s. He died nine years ago today.

Sarah Palin is still an idiot

Even on FOXNews, they’re bashing that poor moron. She doesn’t even understand the concept of Africa being a continent and not a country? Wow. That’s really something.

Not no news

  • Just got back from the Emergeny Veterinary Clinic in Moraine. I had hit Speck full-force in the eye with his latest favorite toy, a Kong tennis-ball dumbbell. He likes daddy to throw it and bounce it off the wall at the top of the stairs so it goes bouncing all the way downstairs. So i threw it hard, but he’d gotten a head start and i popped him right in the eye. No permanent damage, just blunt trauma to the eye – mainly just discomfort. He seems fine now, but we’re out $164 – which digs into our rent, unfortunately. I feel like such an asshole right now.
  • I’ve just started playing Anarchy Online. It’s pretty cool, and you can play the non-expanded version for free. I’m a froobie.
  • I’ve STILL got that damn cough. It’s just not going away. It’s a little better now, though. And when i take my antibiotics, which i’ve been on for a couple of weeks now, i get nauseated and sleepy. I hate this.
  • And i’ve been depressed as hell lately about my life. I’m trying so hard, but i’m going nowhere. I’ve applied at so many places in the last few months that it’s not even funny. I rarely ever seem to get any response. I’ve had a single interview in the last couple of months. It went well, but it looks as if that employer is going to be extending an offer to an earlier candidate.
  • My voter registration has FINALLY been processed. I’m all set to help Obama get elected to the Presidency of the United States.

And, if you haven’t seen it already, check out the Sarah Palin prank call:

Trunk Monkey video

Funniest ads i think i’ve seen in a long, long time. I hope they’re actual ads from a real car dealership. (Not enough energy to check right now.) My favorite is the car thief one. Brilliant and hilarious!

The Northwest Ordinance

The Northwest Ordinance is a band from Dayton, OH. The Northwest Ordinance is also, in a roundabout sort of way, how I came to live in the slavery-prohibited state of Ohio.

I work with Chris Karnes, their lead singer and one-half of their guitar regiment. A splendidly nicer and more down-to-earth fellow you could not ever hope to meet. Yet, when he takes the stage, he becomes a possessed man, hell-bent on spreading the fire-and-brimstone Word of Rock to all within a six-mile radius (the approximate blast radius of their amplifiers). Jumping and skittering, leaping and zig-zagging around, he appears to be some kind of messianic epileptic. I’ve never seen more energy put out by a four-cylinder punk-rawk band in all my life.

Check them out at Canal Street Tavern in glorious downtown Dayton (1 Nov 2006):
[googlevideo]-2765128894187042447[/googlevideo] “Trouble”

[googlevideo]-4672745740412193341[/googlevideo] (no idea what this one’s called but it’s hella entertaining, with masterful tambourine stylings by “Ross,” a kooky bearded dude from the audience!)
