the chasms

omfg where do i start?

today sucked.

preface: we are so poor. that is all about that. we are poor, and it sucks balls. Holly works so hard, and for what? what the hell do i do to make the world any better? not a god damned thing. especially not her world.

on to the viewing…

my old friend is dead. younger than me, dead and gone. i remember yesterday when we were all young and crazy with life and the ecstasy of the world being at our fingertips.

i got there, alone. i killed time rolling a smoke and killing it. i rolled a couple more and walked up. almost immediately some cat comes up for a light. he’s a friend of Jason’s. there is some small talk, then he reveals that there are internal social problems & factioning, a division going on. he calls it childish; “bizarre,” i reply.

after chatting with another of his more recent friends, i mustered up just barely enough guts to go inside. what awaited was hell.

so i go inside and i don’t see anyone i know. except for Susan and Mike, who passed by on their way in. i couldn’t tell if they were ignoring me or if they didn’t recognize me. that was sort of a theme of the evening. they have every reason to ignore me. when i was younger and stupider, i did stupid things and said foolish things to Susan, who i loved then, about Mike, who was actually a terrific guy, really. so there’s that.

i’m in line for about a half an hour, behind a small group of people who obviously bothered to keep up with him in his last years. suddenly i realize that the older gentleman standing idly by is Jason’s dad.

omg. it’s his dad, i thought. omg. is it better that he does or doesn’t recognize me?

see, we used to be really crazy teenagers. really crazy, just completely off the chain and full of joy and insanity. we used to bounce off the walls with energy. we also used to do some questionable stuff. nothing terrible, just not real virtuous behavior. all in good fun, we figured at the time. and it was.

but we got suspended from school once, toward the very ass-end of my senior year, which would have been Jason’s sophomore year, for showing up drunk at a school dance, with liquor and beer in my car to boot. crap. i got him in trouble. i hope they don’t remember that.

he looks at me and we chat, and he doesn’t seem to really remember me well. that’s kind of a big relief.

then the question i was dreading.

no, i said, even though i only live a half hour away, i didn’t really bother to go and see him, as he’s dying, because i just didn’t. because i don’t fucking know, right? i didn’t say it like that, but i certainly meant it like that.

i tried several times to gather a posse together. too many years had passed. i needed a buffer to fill up the empty space of time that had grown like kudzu between us. he and i talked on the phone a few years ago, and the net result of the conversation was, i felt at the time, that he was grown up and doing his thing, and though we were greatly cordial, there was a fairly vast chasm that had come up there in the middle. we weren’t those kids anymore. he didn’t need me in his life. we of course said “we should get together sometime,” and “give me a call anytime,” and neither of us really meant it. though i would have secretly loved to. but you know how it goes. it’s happened to everyone. two old friends, grown apart after too much time.

i loved him, though, and i never stopped loving him. it had just become awkward. that’s why i wanted help, someone to go with me to see him.

so i answered that question. no, i didn’t go to see your dying son in his last couple of years in life. fuck! i wanted to. desperately. i was too scared of that god damned void that had opened up its gaping maw between us to suck our friendship in. i pussied out.

finally, i see him up close.

no mortician on earth really ever makes a dead body look natural. not to me anyway. it’s always a horrific shock to see something that resembles someone you used to know very well lying before you like some kind of expired doppelganger. it was just too unreal. i knew it was him, he just didn’t look… real. that always happens.

the shock, the numbness of it all was overwhelming.

i go outside, roll a couple more smokes, pretend like i’m talking on my phone. anything to keep the questions at bay. thankfully, Travis shows up with his mom. i keep quiet and let them do all the talking. conversations get better that way.

Fred texts me that he can’t show up because he supposedly doesn’t have enough gas. me and Jason were pretty tight back in the day, but Fred and Jason were like peanut butter and jelly. completely inseperable. i am disappointed.

Kevin Holsinger shows up in a little while. the other day i practically cried at the thought of seeing that kooky lil’ kid again. we were never all that close, but i always liked him. you couldn’t not. and we always had terrific laughs together. he doesn’t seem to know who i am, and since it doesn’t really matter anyway, i let the matter be as it is.

later on, Travis and his mom and Kevin and his whole family go out to eat. i didn’t go, it was just too awkward for me. i had a bad day. plus, i needed to pick Holly up from a business meeting. it turned out she got a ride, a fact i knew at right about the same instant as everyone was driving away. not that it would have made a difference.

there was not one single moment of the day that i had any business being a part of. but i owe like hell.

it’s hard when it really sinks in how much you never really mattered in the end, when someone you loved so much and had so much fun with is dead and gone so many years after you last saw them.

In Memory of Froot Loop

Jason Stafford and his sister Danielle
Jason Stafford and his sister Danielle

Yesterday morning at about 7:45 in the a.m., the world lost one of its most gifted and talented minds. My old high school pal Jason Stafford died from ALS after a 2 1/2 year fight that brought his body to its knees.

I met Jason either through mutual friends or through the band program at our old alma mater, Tecumseh High School. Over the years, we became very tight, and performed a number of questionable but downright hilarious acts together. We used to drive fast down country roads and goof off after school. Notoriously, we got childishly drunk and attended a school dance, where we were all caught and suspended. For me, it was my first real taste of alcohol, and became a stupid end to an already faltering career as a high school student.

Jason earned the nickname “Froot Loop” for his unusually wacky sense of humor. You always knew he was around by his loud but always jolly laughter. I don’t think i have any memories of him where he’s not laughing the whole way through. Some of my memories of those times have degraded over the years, leaving just that sacred sound echoing through the fog. If somewhere in the world, something goofy was happening, you could have bet your very life that Jason was involved.

I also credit Jason with turning me on to Drakkar Noir, which was the scent of the day for bemulletted, Camaro-driving guys across the American heartland, and which was virtually guaranteed to get a teenager laid, which it did not in our cases. Or maybe just mine.

Jason played guitar. He had a beautiful gray Les Paul and an Ovation acoustic. He was so humble. He always downplayed his abilities, but he was an extremely capable musician. He also played trumpet. Along with Bill Davenport, we formed an ad hoc band at band camp my senior year called Homicidal Cat, for the sole purpose of playing “Helter Skelter” and freaking out the grownups. We were lousy, but not because of poor musicianship on anyone’s part. In hindsight, we should have had a drummer.

He and i both always ran around with the bad crowd, and by bad crowd, i mean drummers and saxaphone players. People who, instead of rocking out to Phantom of the Opera, were rocking out to Metallica, the Pink Floyd, and AC/DC.

We were in marching band together. That’s probably all i should say about that. Whenever you hear the phrase “this one time, in band camp,” you should bear in mind that high school students who are shipped far away from parental guidance make a habit out of having an absolutely improper amount of fun, and much of it highly questionable.

I can say with impunity, knowing whatever statute of limitations may have been applied has long gathered dust by now, that he was absolutely instrumental, no pun intended, in the creation and probably the transportation of the World’s Largest Spitball (unconfirmed), which had to be transported via industrial-sized trashcan lid, over to the girls building, where it was promptly dropped by the two or three giggling chicken-shits it took to do so, of whom i was among their number. He also assisted in the removal of an extension cord which was inconveniently supplying a camping site worker with electricity which would have otherwise caused him to wake up on time, and with a weather forecast that would have permitted our band director to make plans for us that day.

I only have a single memory of him where we didn’t get along for a few minutes. After school one day, he jumped into my blue 1977 Chevy Nova, started it, and proceeded to repeatedly test out the transmission by shifting it back and forth, back and forth, from Drive to Reverse, with myself on top, pounding vigorously on the hood and demanding angrily that he let go of my precious toy. Within about ten minutes (probably less), he was hugging me and calling me a teddy bear.

I’ve never in all my life, either before or since, met a more good-hearted or sweet-natured guy, and i probably never will again. And whatever happened between high school and now, i will forever be saddened that i wasn’t right there with him, because if there was ever a guy who you could count on to cheer you up no matter what the circumstances were, it was Jason Stafford.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a degenerative nervous system disorder that is always fatal. Treatments are available but there is no cure. Famous sufferers include Stephen Hawking, who has had it since 1963, and guitarist/composer Jason Becker. It is terrible, but with advances in stem cell technology, there may yet be hope for the future.

Heheh

Here’s a funny card i sent to my good friend Greg earlier today. I think it’s a minor fucking masterpiece.

It's been too long since we threw up on each other.

Thought about you while on the toilet today, directly after touching myself in an inappropriate and medically questionable manner, and right before i scrambled downstairs to find those pills that i take to help me forget that i am secretly a raging homosexual. Forgetting my prior enterprise, i neglected to wipe and left a warm, gooey trail all the way down the hall, which will henceforward always remind me fondly of you, and your inadvisably unaltered face.

Have decided i’m going to dedicate my life to Jesus. Do you know him? He’s that Mexican guy who lives at the end of my block. I just found out that he was the one who “stole my innocence,” back in my prison days. That’s a euphemism for fist-raping me in the man-twat while wearing rawhide work gloves and strangling me erotically with a bicycle chain his sister sneaked in for him.

Anyway, wishing you a happy whatever-it-is that you people celebrate today. Oh, wait, i forgot – you’re white. In that case, just have a regular, mediocre day. I’m sure you’re used to having nothing much to look forward to by now. Remember, the Bible says that the meek will inherit the Earth, and that the Bible has been all but proven to be completely full of lies. So don’t get your hopes up, lest they be pointlessly dashed against the rocks like so many empty-headed salmon. Fortunately for you, the inevitable Heat Death of the Universe will ultimately render us both paradoxically equals. So you have that going for you anyway.

I sincerely hope your cries for help do not remain unheeded for much longer, especially seeing as i’ve placed a rather large wager that you’ll survive until at least the end of the year. I do try to keep up with whether or not you’ve died; in the future (once my foolish but potentially lucrative bet has paid off), i’ll try to take a more active role in this regard.

See you at the comic book store with all the other clammy, pale losers and underwear-fetishists.

With greatest vague ambivalence or something,
your well-heeled, superior-bred Estonian advocate,
jeremy

p.s., oh, and give my best to M, and keep whatever’s left over for yourself. I think you deserve it, even if no-one else does.

What today was like

  1. Our mice have become entirely intolerable. Sometime during the night last night, one (or more) of them have somehow managed to Indiana Jones its way onto the kitchen counter, and ate a big chunk of our bread. Seriously, wtf? This, likely, because we are now even hiding our dog’s food lately, which i’m sure is not a popular decision with our dear little Speck. I have renewed my war with the rodents with vigor and prejudice. Our landlord must rectify this. Conditions are approaching unlivable. Failure: landlord.
  2. Oops, somehow missed a credit card bill. I’m not perfect, but i don’t know how i forgot that one. Failure: mine.
  3. Vectren, our fuel provider, informed us that our incredible $700+ bill was, in fact, incorrect. Due to – ahemunderestimations, it should actually have been more than twice that. Yes – read that again. We owe $1500+ for gas used over the past year, because of underestimations. I should have been suspicious that our water was, in fact, hotter than the surface temperature on Venus, and yet our bill was never unbelievably high. In fact, they had sent out notices a few times over the past several months, requesting an inside read off of the meter, but i, being an online bill-payer, assumed they were paper bills and simply ignored them. Thankfully, we have a year to pay it off in full. Failure: mine, with a little help from Vectren (hey, they had my voice number & e-mail).
  4. Holly’s friend from work called us “idiots.” Holly, apparently for putting up with me; and me for not going out and getting a gas station job months ago (believe me, i’ve been searching, but maybe i set my sites a little too high for this crummy town). Failure: my own. Though her friend’s callousness was a little over-the-top.
  5. Holly’s student loans have come due six months earlier than expected. Failure: apparently the lender, as she was quite clear that they would be due six months after graduation. It’s of course possible there was some nefarious fine print hidden away somewhere in obscure legalese.
  6. Holly is so very exhausted and just completely strung out from all these awful stresses, which of course now also include her newly-diagnosed diabetic neuropathy (her latest round of medical testing is costing around $1200). Failure: again, mine.

Final tally? Don’t even tell me, i already know.

So you can see how i might be feeling a little crappy about myself, and about life in general lately. Things have hit critical mass, so to speak.

Oh, i didn’t mention a few ongoing issues, like the killer mold that is growing in our bedroom, from water leaking in through the windowsill. Those things weren’t specific to today.

On the positive side, i did have [what i think was] a good phone interview for a corporation i’d actually love to work for. I’m really hoping for the best, but you never know in this town. Just in case, though, i’ve also applied for a couple of menial positions. We shall see how things unfold soon enough.

The Northwest Ordinance

The Northwest Ordinance is a band from Dayton, OH. The Northwest Ordinance is also, in a roundabout sort of way, how I came to live in the slavery-prohibited state of Ohio.

I work with Chris Karnes, their lead singer and one-half of their guitar regiment. A splendidly nicer and more down-to-earth fellow you could not ever hope to meet. Yet, when he takes the stage, he becomes a possessed man, hell-bent on spreading the fire-and-brimstone Word of Rock to all within a six-mile radius (the approximate blast radius of their amplifiers). Jumping and skittering, leaping and zig-zagging around, he appears to be some kind of messianic epileptic. I’ve never seen more energy put out by a four-cylinder punk-rawk band in all my life.

Check them out at Canal Street Tavern in glorious downtown Dayton (1 Nov 2006):

You can get The Cocker Spaniels‘ absolutely brilliant (and brilliantly named) album Withstand the Whatnot for free on their website! I urge you to listen and to donate (not only does the artist get 100% of the profits, but it will help him to finance the production of his next CD)! This is one of the greatest albums ever recorded by one of the greatest rock bands ever to come down the pike.

projects

Some projects I am currently involved with/have volunteered for:

I’ve asked not to be paid for any of this, although it’s going to be pretty overwhelming to work all this into a rapidly shrinking allotment of free time. Resume fodder is enough for me for now, and I certainly can’t charge friends for services.

Issues

Having CSS issues with IE (even IE7). Still trying to figure out why. So far, Big Urgent Wish works absolutely perfectly in Firefox and Opera, but in IE7 there’s irrational whitespace to the right (about the width of one of the sidebars), causing a horizontal scrollbar, while IE6 isn’t applying the opacity filter to the center div or footer (a width issue is my first guess on that one).

Once I get these issues ironed out, I’ll upload the thing and see what happens then.

[UPDATE] Just got back from Grog‘s (picking up CDs to review for the Chickenfish Speaks) and groceries. To make a crap day off crappier, on the way there, the “low tire pressure” light came on. Fearing an impending flat, I bolted, stopping at the gas station to pay 50 cents for three minutes of standing in the wind and rain, wishing I had a tire gauge and a flashlight. One tire was missing a stem cap, so that’s probably all it was, since all of the tires seemed reasonably inflated to me.

Did anyone see Bush’s press conference today? Scary, creepy, and pathetic. I’ll blog more about that later.

Fantastic manuscript

I just got done reading my friend Jackie Corley‘s manuscript. Devastated. Trust me, this will blow you away. When it gets out there onto the shelves, finally, you will need to take a deep breath and plunge right into the raging torrent of a story this is. It’s tragic, moving, and crazy good.

New page: Tutorials

Because I seem to be the only person in my local circle of friends who understands web code, I receive lots of requests from people to help them jank up their MySpace pages. In response, I’ve created the first tutorial: MySpace: the DIV element. This tutorial assumes you know a little bit about HTML and CSS going in. In future tutorials, I’ll cover basic HTML and CSS.

And i’ve just finished adding the comments functionality to pages (as opposed to blog posts), so if you have any questions or need help, I’ll do my best to clarify. This is a work in progress.

Spill some for my homies

I’m thinking about dead friends:

Stacey Hurt (class of ’89) hung herself a year or two after she graduated. I sat by her in Study Hall. We had a great time. There are very sweet things about her that i will never, ever forget. I still have a notebook she wrote on somewhere. Nothing but fond memories. I’ll never forget how i felt a little emptier when she graduated early. That last goodbye was so weak, yet it lasted forever.

I once introduced her to Kevin Lay (90). That scene in my head still creeps me out. There was actually some talk that he just as likely could have swerved to HIT a dog. Either way sounds equally true, if you knew Kevin! That was a black, black day that scarred many of us in his class for life. Even though my politics have changed dramatically since high school, i always had great respect for him. He was one of The Good Ones (if a little overly-mischeivous)! I still use his classic put-down: “turn around and put your head down!”

Mike Mettler (91) will also always lay claim to a sore spot on my heart. He hung himself several years ago at his mother’s house. He was so much fun, so much fun. We invented kooky names and dances and had a great time. The great music we shared, angry and beautiful, always reminds me of him. Dishdogs 4 life. Mojo.

Jimmy Harris (89) was on my bus route. He could be hell sometimes, but i’ll never ever forget the time i was walking out of the restroom and he was walking in, and he said something like, “Hey, Jarratt, what’s up?” – that floored me. I was a freshman and about as uncool as a person could get. I had no idea that he knew my name. Thanks, Jimmy. That meant something, man. Set fire to himself, allegedly while tripping balls.

Bill White (89) …what can i say? He was a cocky bastard who i hated, and a devious angel who i jealously adored. I got to see a real good side of him, though. He was a lot humbler than he usually let on, especially as he got older and gentler. He got through a whole lot of hell in his life. A master musician, on both guitar and drums; my favorite band to play in was any with him in it, even if i was in a Bill-hating phase. The best, though, was with him and Jeremy & Tony Dawson. I always felt *tremendously* honored that he took drums and gave his blessing to my sorry worthless ass to play the guitar (we were way past the bullshit by then). He shot himself just a few years ago, and nobody really understands that but him. I fully regret not being able to catch him before he finally fell.

There are too many others. None are truly gone from us until we have forgotten them at last. Never forget.

I guess i’d say that Mike and Bill hurt the most. It hurts a lot, even to this terrible moment.

Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.

And anguish, somehow, to deep, breathless joy.

Spill a little for my homies, thump thump.

Holly: ER2 update

Holly went to the ER the other day with a high blood sugar level of three hundred and something. She only spent maybe 3 hours there and came home with a new plan (twice the insulin dose) and has been feeling much better since.

Holly is home!

Holly’s home. She’s doing so much better but isn’t 100% yet. If i had to pin it down, i’d say she’s about 66.2%, give or take about 1.3% or so. Roughly.

We had a tough time today. Since my blood pressure is somewhat high, i’m just going to cut open an artery and let it vent for a little bit and hope that you, good reader(s), don’t mind too much. Maybe you can even empathize.

2 pm: I get to the hospital about ten minutes after they told her she’d be released. Maybe an hour later, i’d stepped outside for a cigarette. When i got back, there were suddenly about 6 or 7 whitecoats standing around her bed, brandishing clipboards menacingly. I’d missed most of the sermon, so i’m of little help now and have to do a lot of reading. Their leader advised her that they’d need to get a quick blood sample from her before she left so they’d be ready for her appointment on Monday. The throng exited as one shortly thereafter.

Another hour and a half passed before a nurse came in and said that they already had blood from earlier that day that they would use and that we hadn’t needed to be waiting all that time. The lab rats (probably Umbrella Corporation sleeper agents), from their cavernous, heavily fortified underground lair deep beneath the hospital, never called the nurse to inform her of this fact. Being the messenger (and thereby the bearer of bad news), we shot her dead on the spot and ran out of there as fast as our little legs could carry us.

We got to the pharmacy a short time later. I was starving, but i acquiesced to Holly’s unreasonable demand for insulin. She is, after all, a diabetic, i suppose. Here’s what happened at the pharmacy:

First (to back up just a tad in order to give some indication of the trouble that was to follow soon enough), we found that the hospital had greedily stolen her temporary insurance card. I’d noticed most of the staff eyeing it covetingly, then glancing at us with great contempt, finally turning back to stare, drooling, at her little 2×3 piece of the American Health Care Industry Pie. Each of them followed the exact same pattern and had the same hungry, insurance-card-addled look in their hollow little eye sockets. I didn’t think anything of it at the time. Now that i know for sure that there are indeed addicts working there, you bet your ass i’m going to report it to the FBI.

Needless to say, we got to the pharmacy, dropped off the prescription, and then had to trek back to the apartment to print another insurance card. The printer, obviously, jammed on us, leaving us with a crooked, besmudged piece of crap that no pharmacist, in their right mind or not, would (or indeed should) have taken. Luckily, the pharmicists were all definitely drug addicts and definitely not of the correct mental state required to do their job within the boundaries of good sense, as evidenced by this next bit, and by the fact that they were all shaking and jerking violently, and babbling in some foreign moon-speak among themselves.

Then… the idiot girl taking the prescription couldn’t spare the mental resources to navigate the tricky, tricky phone prompts while calling Holly’s new insurer. Since she couldn’t verify the coverage, she simply handed the card back to us and advised us of her incompetent state, albeit more vaguely than that, and not in so many words. She also made a big damn deal about not knowing what brand of lancets the doctor had prescribed, telling us as much as that she was entirely without the power to ask us if we knew what brand monitor we, obviously, already had. We showed them the monitor and explained that that wasn’t a big problem, but that we needed to get test strips and couldn’t find any; so being that Holly’s a newly diagnosed diabetic and since they must have them behind the counter, would they please give us more information? Not hearing this, they continued bickering about the godforsaken lancets.

Holly called the insurance “people” [citation needed] and straightened everything out, telling the pharmacist that she has to be reimbursed and that her coverage is only for $100 a year anyway. I wish like hell that the previous sentence was just some kooky hyperbole, but it’s not. Holly plunked down $160 and we were on our way to grab some quick dinner and head the hell home.

Except that we didn’t get the test strips. The god damn test strips that every diabetic from Moses to B.B. King must have to keep an eye on their blood sugar level. The things that keep a diabetic away from the brink of danger. The things we already made a big deal about, while they were busy making a big deal about jack shit.

We got the test strips. $95 for 100 of ’em. It wasn’t pretty, but we got them all right. Don’t tell Homeland Security you read anything here about the, uh, incident that happened at the Walgreens in Bellbrook, ok?
