finally calling about apartments today. most of them want a $20-40 application fee plus a month’s rent (or a little less) deposit, and most of them do credit checks (possible bummer). these are the good ones. however, they are pretty cheap ($335-400) and they all pay for some or most utilities. i’ve only been calling the Kettering places today; i still have to call about apartments in the Belmont/Oakwood area.

UPDATE: i found a place for cheaper than cheap ($250) with free everydamnthing and $99 deposit & no application fee (which may even mean there’s no credit check). it’s at superior & central, which prolly ain’t the best neighborhood in the world, but it can’t be the worst. i know where the worst is, and i’m not going there.

i have a few appointments for tomorrow, so if anyone *ahem* wants to come into town and take a look with me… the first appointment is at 10:30am, though. the rest are in the afternoon.

my biggest fear right now is that i’ll pull through on something, and then when i turn around to say “see, you should’ve had a little faith,” there won’t be anyone there.

i’m nervous about something, and it’s NOT about finding an apartment. oddly enough, there are so many apartments in the Dayton area that people are practically giving them away. it’s actually quite breathtaking to behold.

i got myself across Europe on less than $1k, including round-trip airfare, and a month’s worth of boarding. i can do anything.

if a bum lands a job and a crib in the city, and noone’s there to witness it, does he still make a sound?

my finger has been violently painful lately. it’s this damn weather. i hate northern climates.

on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most painful pain imaginable, last night held at nearly 70 for four solid hours.

no, you can NOT imagine. don’t try.

did i mention that i’m STILL out of painkillers and topical anasthetics? not that they help much, but i’d sure love to have some right about now. this is getting old as dirt.

early this a.m., finished Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. pretty good stuff, though i can kinda see Rowling’s writing starting to go downhill already. it just had a couple of hackish moments, namely too-convenient plot devices. it’s funny how it’s always lumped into the fantasy section, when they’re really just better-than-mediocre mystery novels.

i downloaded the latest Consolidated album, so i think i’ll go and listen to it while reading through the apartment listings.

anyone wanna contribute to my moving out fund? if it helps, my birthday is coming up. i don’t like begging, but things are getting kind of desperate.

in 15 years, Tony and i have NEVER had an argument over ANYTHING.

tonight, we did.

we eventually worked it out, though. it was all over semantics. no big deal. strange, though. very odd.

he wants to get a big house with Lisa and i, and his fiancee Tasha, sometime down the road. i think that’s a great idea. down the road.

i got to have a couple short lines of IM with my sweetie just now, right before she passed out, so i’m unduly happy :)

it occurred to me just now that the reason why things didn’t quite work out the first time Lisa and i dated, a little over one year ago, was because of this:

the Main Mistake we made was counting things as mistakes.

we didn’t make any mistakes at all. not a single one, really. we only failed to work through the little obstacles.

and now?

we’ve been very successful so far. the last time, it was actually beautifully successful, up until we started marking down little errors as tragic mistakes. this time, however, the added ingredient is determination, plus a dash of (for lack of a better word) Love.

i’ve been thinking about all those little moments that Lisa and i have shared together. you know, all those little moments.

the one that most sticks out right now, being very recent and all, but nonetheless very touching and sweet, is sitting on the sofa, holding each other, and partaking in Ringo’s pain whilst watching the Beatles’ Anthology, final disk, “The Long and Winding Road” segment, from those legendary Let It Be sessions.

we were laughing at the silliness of it all (30 years later; easy to do, y’know?), yet probably both of us just kind of welling up at the sight of poor, poor, devastated Ringo, and thinking that that really was very much towards the very final utter end of this massively great, wonderful band that we both had loved so very much.

and how she cleverly pointed out that that song was really about the breakup of the Beatles themselves, and not some fictional girl Paul had made up.

i get more in love with her every single moment. i think that this may very well be the proverbial “It” for me.

ok, i lied. i don’t actually think that this “may very well be” It. i am damned convinced of it, to tell the truth.

it’s the way she sparkles.

so my girlfriend had a rough time coming to terms with the fact that she had to kill off most of those horrific, Lovecraftian monstrosities. i feel for her. i’m the same way. i really admire those Buddhist monks who walk around with brooms, sweeping the path in front of them, lest they accidentally crush an unwary insect. that’s just tremendous to me. i wish i had the will to do just that. we Westerners are told that it’s because they think the ants might be a relative, via reincarnation, which really just goes to show how shallow our feeble little western minds really are. it’s not that; that’s so superficial and self-centered (albeit indirectly self-centered). really, it’s because they have respect for Life. for ALL forms of Life.

Life is holy, man. think about that the next time you find yourself in a position where you have to make a decision to snuff out another creature’s Consciousness, their Awareness. i do. i think about that all the time. all living creatures, to the lowest forms of Life, experience some sort of self-awareness.

think of the horror of being mauled by a thing a hundred thousand times your weight.

what these insects don’t understand (and i never thought i’d ever start a sentence in just that particular way…) is that they can be harmful in some very real ways to other creatures.

we need to understand the same things for ourselves. we can be harmful, too. look at what we’re doing to the Oceans (as just one horrible example out of literally zillions).

i think about Beastie Boy (and Buddhist) Adam Yauch, who won’t let people eat in his apartment, for fear they’ll leave crumbs, which will attract cock-a-roaches, which he does not wish to have to kill. that is meaningful to me.

but back to her…

i love the fact that there is so much left to explore in her. i have been very careful for three years now not to ask too many questions all at once. for one thing, too much information is too easily forgot, and all at once no less. so i’ve tried to keep my questioning to a minimum. and that’s really worked, i think, because there is still, as i’ve said, so much left. she has such depth! i want to be that fresh to her in the years to come.

oh, in the beginning, it was all questions! how sweet… “do you like rainbows and sunsets and chocolate and Mars and elves and prairies and Bob Dylan and… and… and…?” that’s how it was all the time. i learned enough back then to know that i wanted her to be my friend, a good friend, for life.

i was thinking the other day of all the things that i bet i already know about her, without knowing for sure. like, i’ve gleaned from her grammatical corrections that she’s into words, but i don’t quite know if she’s an amateur etymologist like i am. (how thrilled i was, such a geek that i am, to know that my old coworker Nancycooke was into words like that!) but i’m trying to be patient. i don’t want to exhaust her supply of charms, which are probably inexhaustible anyway (near as i can tell), but i’m not taking chances – she’s special. i want to always have new things to explore in her. i want us to be new and fresh to each other for a long time.

and it’s funny, because here i’ve known this wonderful girl for 3 years this November, and it all still seems so wonderful and new and, thus, romantic to me. i’m glad i got the early questions out of the way. i know we’re compatible now. but i’m even gladder to have left plenty unasked.

we’re going to have a LOT to talk about, for a good while.

also, she wrote something very sweet today concerning me. i was quite moved, to say the very least.

right now my belovéd is having to battle for her life with five angry, gargantuan mosquitoes straight out of prehistory.

these fuckers are like six inches long. i’ve SEEN them.

i hope she wins.
