Mark Hild

Some terrible news about Mark Hild. From Richie Eldridge:

“I have some sad news concerning Mark Hild. He has lost his battle with Muscular Dystrophy. He went into Cardiac Arrest on Tuesday and suffered a lot of brain damage. He has very limited production out of his brain stem. Not enough to sustain life. They are going to be taking him off of his ventilator today at 5. His mom Alice is expecting the funeral to be on Monday. The Celebration of Life Service will be held in huber heights, somewhere off of 202. He will be buried in New Carlisle. I will let you know when I hear more. We are trying to let as many people know from our Class as possible.”

Mark is/was a good kid, and he just happened to be a symbol for Fighting Against All Odds for our class. We all knew this grim moment would eventually come, and many expected it to be a whole lot sooner. It still doesn’t relieve the horrifying shock or the profound sadness.

When i last saw him, he looked like a CHAMPION. A champion. And a champion he will always, always be.

He didn’t lose, he f-ing WON, i say. He just left a little earlier than most.

We are all very, very fortunate to have been in his sphere at the same pinpoint in the history of the universe to have been able to know him, and know what a wonderful, swell guy he was.

To Mark Hild! Godspeed!

Klan follies

i hope that’s not really our own Jim Gay. It’s not very nice to say things like that, warranted or not.

student wearing Klan attire not found to be harassing (local)

Klanswear ok at Tecumseh Local Schools?

i just sent this letter to District Superintendent Jim Gay:

Mr. Gay,

Hello, i was just reading about the Civil Rights case at Olive Branch and wanted to know more information. Specifically, i would like to know by what methods it was determined that “no harassment took place.” It is very interesting to me that a kid could claim that another kid was wearing a Klan getup on school property, yet nothing found to be deserving of further inquiry. If the other student was not wearing Klan regalia, then what, exactly, were they found to be wearing? And if they were indeed wearing Klanswear, what action was taken, if any, and why was this sort of attire permitted (or was it instead encouraged)?

I understand freedom of expression is a precious and invaluable thing in our society, but likewise is freedom from harassment. I think you’ll agree that wearing a swastika to a synagogue would constitute a similarly grave social blunder, if not also break harassment and/or anti-hate crime laws.

I thank you for your time, and will greatly appreciate your response.

Regards,

x jeremy jarratt, POEE

(of course, i plan on forwarding any “interesting” information received in return to local media.)

Cocker Spaniels come to Ohio!!!

Firstly,

people in Ohio must pick a show and see a very, very talented dude play great rock music. (i’ll be at Elbo’s on sunday, the 20th)

he’s from Tejas (formerly NYC) and his band the Cocker Spaniels are playing some very rare Ohio shows.

his music is fucking fantastic. very energetic, emotionally raw, totally original indie rock music. Guided by Voices’ Rob Pollard loves the stuff, and he’s by many accounts The Best Band You’ve Never Heard. someday [not] soon enough he will be Big Shit (we’re talking Pavement/Modest Mouse/Bright Eyes/Death Cab for Cutie territory here), if he keeps making such vital, honest rock and roll.

i can’t say enough about how startlingly good his CD, Withstand the Whatnot, is. you really, really ought to be good to your ears and pick up a copy while you’re there.

you’ll thank him at the show, and then come home, spent and exhausted, and thank me for telling you. BELIEVE ME.
