jae lethe (he/she/they) is a blogger, musician, artist, poet, web developer/designer, armchair philosophizer, teller of tales, and gadabout. Also, something he calls a "behavioral artist." (Not sure.) She has plans. BIG plans.
Among the things that he has done for a laugh are minor fractures, cuts, scrapes, and various scabs. Though she's quick to point out that they're no imbecile, we're fairly certain that he thinks the word means some kind of medieval pharmacist.
This is her latest home on teh internets - where jae stores their swear words, when they're not hurling them at the sun in vain.

The CNP’s Hostile Takeover of the GOP

In 1981 the Council for National Policy was formed. A bunch of hard-right republicans basically made an easy channel for extremely religious, wealthy, or super conservative politicians, elites, or news outlets to have major influence in the US over the GOP as well as some influence from abroad.
This group has shown to be involved with some of the Russian elites as well, even from it’s early days. In 1997 the Foundation for Geopolitics
was written by Aleksandr Dugin, which has had huge influence over Russian government, elite, and it’s police force.
All the major players on Trump overlap with CNP. Highly influential members have included Patrick Pizzella (Tied to Russian oil business in the early 90s), Kellyanne Conway (Husband tied with Russian bribes), Becky Dunlop, and Ed Meese.
The four of them started Conservative Action Project in 2008, highlighting almost every action Trump takes, all his obsessive vendettas against Obama were started in this group.
They are also some of the largest, most vocal opponents to the Mueller investigation.
Oh, and will you look at that, one of it’s previous members was David fucking Bossie. The guy is the president of Citizens United
. So after Citizens United V. FEC suddenly all this dirty money could start getting funneled into the US politics unchecked.
This group has been heavily influencing the GOP for a long time now, and even if some of the establishment republicans may be pushing back, I assure you, they are well infiltrated by this powerhouse.
The CNP biggest backer is Robert Mercer. He’s also the number-three Republican/conservative megadonor on the group’s list of disclosed donors. He made headlines as the largest benefactor of the “Make America Number 1” super-PAC, at $15.5 million donated. The PAC employed both Stephen Bannon and Kellyanne Conway.
Breitbart CEO Larry Solov revealed he owns the site, along with founder Andrew Breitbart’s widow, Susie Breitbart, and the Mercer family.
‘No other donor has come close to the impact that the Mercer family has had in building the foundation for’ — what he calls — ‘the Trump revolution.’”
—Steve Bannon
Mercer basically owns the party, the propaganda, and CNP.
So when it boils down to it we see who really controls the GOP. Trump is just a tool for them. Ties to Russia are mostly though them, not necessarily exclusively though Trump.
It is entirely clear to me that everyone isn’t “protecting Trump” around Trump, they are protecting their entire establishment from the ground up. If he falls hard enough, they all fall with him.
Alternatively, if everyone hyper focuses on Trump only, they all get away with it, and only one stooge takes the fall.
EDIT: Please take this with a grain of salt. I did not expect this to get as big as it did.
I am by no means an expert, and this is conspiracy theory-level stuff. I keep feeling like current political events keep feeling like a conspiracy novel manifesting itself, however remember there could be far more factors at play that I am not educated on, or the connections could be weaker than I realize. I highly encourage that people criticize points, share what they know, and either add points, remove points, or outright destroy what I’ve come up with!
Also, I want to emphasize, I see this scenario as meaning the CNP did a hostile takeover of the GOP as well. A reminder that the right isn’t some enemy, but could be a victim of the CNP with their help from Russia. Don’t look at other americans as enemies, we’re all in this shitshow together, and even if some are being… well, far from their best, they were then a victim of the same entity as everyone else.

This administration has done nothing to combat anti-government and extreme right-wing terrorism. On the contrary, they have rescinded previous programs and laws and have created a breeding ground for an increase of hate crime and domestic terrorism. Many of us have been warning that the current political atmosphere, from rhetoric espoused by the media and political figures to the actions taken by this administration, breeds extremity.
In 2009 and 2015 the Department of Homeland Security, as well as the FBI, warned us about the rise of right wing terrorism.[1] Guess what President Trump and this administration did as one of their first acts? Cut funding to programs meant to combat far right terrorism.[2] This action was taken when we know that there is a growing trend of anti-government terrorism.[3] This is a problem for both sides of the political spectrum, for example the left leaning and pro-Bernie[4] anti-government terrorist who shot at GOP Congressman Scalise at a baseball game as an example.[5] However, the majority of terrorist attacks are perpetuated by the far right in America. This snippet from a NYT op-ed shows just how ridiculous the terrorism rhetoric has become while this administration ignores white supremacy terrorism.[6] This isn’t discounting the threat of terrorism, however I find it astonishing that this administration and the GOP/right wing media sphere completely ignore the largest perpetrators of terrorism in America.[7]
The frequency of far-right attacks is particularly significant in the United States, where white supremacist, anti-government and neo-Nazi extremists have been responsible for 73 percent of deadly terrorist attacks since Sept. 11, 2001, according to the Government Accountability Office. Also notable is that in many cases, Muslims have become the target of violence.
The United States of America is a victim of 300 violent attacks inspired by the far right every year.[8] A recent example are the three men from Illinois who were charged with a mosque bombing, one of the men drafted a border wall plan for Trump.[9] I’ll include this small excerpt from an article by USA Today, I implore everyone to read how right-wing terrorism is rapidly accelerating in America. This all occurred in a single week in May of 2017 and yet President Trump is still waiting for all the facts before he does anything.[10]
• May 20 – Richard Collins III, an African American and Bowie State University student, was stabbed to death by Sean Urbanski, a member of a Facebook group called the “Alt-Reich: Nation.”
• May 26 – Three men in Portland tried to stop white supremacist Jeremy Christian from harassing two women who appeared to be Muslim. For their bravery, the three men were viciously attacked; two were murdered and the third was seriously injured.
• May 27 – Anthony Hammond was arrested in Clearlake, Calif. for allegedly stabbing a black man with a machete, after yelling racial slurs. While en route to the Lake County Jail, Hammond threatened to kill the transporting officer and his family once he was released. Hammond was charged with committing a hate crime, among other charges.
• May 28 – Two Native American men in Washington State were run over by a pickup truck driven by a white man shouting racial slurs and war whoops. One of the tribal members was killed and the other hospitalized.
All of these attacks were committed by extremists who appear to be inspired by a politically motivated ideology that posits racial, moral and religious superiority and demands violent action to advance it. People are dead or injured because of ideologically motived attacks. Where is the public outrage? Where are the calls for national unity and enhanced security? Why aren’t we asking where and how these people were radicalized?
Helk, even National Security Adviser John Bolton tapped up a Neo-Nazi as the Chief of Staff of the National Security Council.[11]

YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE BORDER KIDS A brief, research backed exposé.
I wanted to bring to your attention some very disturbing facts regarding the missing kids covered in the news as late. I will be contacting many investigative journalists but I hope that you will take up this story because it is a very big one and needs to be known… i hope that you, as a fellow human, will find the time to devote to this story and I will help you every step of the way, if you ask it.
Please look into this.
First off… I don’t care what side of the aisle you identify with; red, blue, purple, rainbow…whatever.
We are all, at the end of the day, one human species. A core feature of our humanity is our offspring and, as human beings, we should all labor to protect the weakest among us.
Should.
With the recent report of immigrant children being separated from parents, I have really started to become suspicious (moreso than before). Whereas this practice is not new*, it should be EXTREMELY alarming to consider the implications of what exactly is occuring.
It is not solely immigrant children that are going missing…
I am exhausted, mentally and physically, due to nearly 8 hours of constant research so I cannot compile a complete list of all the things I’ve read, plus my computer and phone both seem to keep freezing up.
The bottom line is this:
DynCorp a la Cerberus Capital, the PMSC of choice for this administration (Feinberg appointment as head of Intelligence Advisory) is and HAS BEEN the corporation hired to manage Child Protective Services.
Let this sink in…
The private mercenary group who was caught in Bosnia prostituing children, the PMSC that brought you underage boys to dance for DynCorp employees, the people who were caught killing civilians un-impeded in Iraq… The organization who used labor slaves from war-ravaged areas is now the agency tasked with keeping track of thousands of undocumented children…
They are awarded contracts in all branches of the military as well as the Dept of Health & hospitals and the SSA…**
What better way to make sure the populace at large is kept blinded of the fact that these children, as well as many other thousands in the CPS system, than to have unstoppaple access to all databases that could potentially track them?
I’m aware that, following Bosnia, new ownership was found; however, this does not mean that those practices were condemned or even punished…at all. And they apparently still seem to have an issue with high-level execs continuing to perpetuate pedophilia…
No DynCorp employee has ever been criminally prosecuted for any of these crimes. While most recently in April of 2017 the Vice President of Business Development for DynCorp, James Grazioplene, was arrested for molesting children in the 1980s, this was during his term as an officer in the United States Army.***
Now… Let’s add to this fact that Trump had to choose between DeVos’ brother, Eric Prince (Blackwater/Academi/the list goes on…) And Feinberg (Cerberus Capital/DynCorp/Computer Sciences Corporation)… He chose the guy with a company that is well-versed in human trafficking instead of Blackwater, who just harvested organs and made millions off of Afghani heroin.
So my point is… We have hundreds of thousands of immigrant kids, separated from their families, by an agency that had NO OBLIGATION to tell family members where they are, run by an organization of mercenaries that specialize in child rape, under a president who so publicly decried child sex trafficking that he hired the leader of a well-known, corrupt contractor and signed an executive order that has NO SPECIFIC POLICY on trafficking via PMSC’s….
And if that’s not enough to satiate your need for proof…. Trafficking has increased under this administration. ****

DynCorp international was awarded a contract for Puerto Rico…
And at least one DOE teacher caught trafficking…
https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/former-puerto-rico-doe-teacher-found-guilty-child-exploitationRep. Cynthia McKinney on cspan in 2005 questioning why DynCorp was granted further government contracts. She was voted out shortly after this.
Rep. Nancy Schafer exposed “legal kidnapping” perpetuated by the CPS. She was found dead shortly after a highly public campaign for accountability and transparency regarding CPS.
Other various articles AND books covering the blatant disregard for the lives and bodies of literal children by DynCorp. Proven, documented cases of human slavery as perpetuated by this PMSC.

And there is so much more info out there that I could provide, but I know that this is far more than anyone else will look at.
Please, cover this story. We are talking about potentially thousands of children that could be forced into the most physically and emotionally damaging situations that you or I could conceive of…
Thank you for your time.
Edit: Yes, I am aware that there is a need for further investigation. I’m not a reporter, just a parent with deep concerns regarding these children and a little bit of spare time between work/school/kids/volunteering.
I apologize if my little bit of research doesn’t satisfy you but there is something here. Hence me trying to find a journalist as they will have more time and resources to devote to this issue.
My intention here is coming from a genuine concern for the children and I apologize for not having the time to fully source everything. I’m working from a shitty phone with limited time/resources.
Again, thank you for taking time to read and I encourage all of you to look past superficial and pre-scripted narratives and dive into these connections on your own.
Edit 2: Again, I am NOT a reporter, so my research is limited because I don’t have the tools that a pro reporter would have. That being said, here are a few things:
This is a good read regarding how CSC (which I have recently discovered has become DXC after CSC merged with HP) has become inured in the Medicaid industry – specifically aimed at children and fostercare.
The pdf on her site is one I’ve read through and have on my phone but i cant figure out how to upload it (I’m technologically impaired).
https://beverlytran.blogspot.com/2017/02/the-cia-origin-of-medicaid-fraud-in.html?m=1And this is a recent conference where DXC was a presenter speaking on how to reform child welfare for foster kids.
Like i said, I’m not a reporter but I am looking into much more so that I can figure out wtf is going on here. I truly do not wish or want to believe that the sitting President would allow this; Trump’s stance on human trafficking was something I was actually INCREDIBLY thrilled about.
That being said, I want to know exactly what the fuck is happening.
This has been an ONGOING issue for at least the last three POTUS and Hillary & the Clinton foundation is NOT disconnected from this, among other quite nefarious stuff.
I am not Democrat nor Republican. I do not believe that ANY party that employs and enables corrupt organizations to destroy lives un-impeded is a party that stands for me or mine.
Edit 3: Holy shit. Triple gilded. Thank you so much but I’m not doing this for thanks or recognition.
I am a concerned American patriot and I want every child within our borders (and the world) to be safe.
EDIT 4: WATCH. THIS. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

Why are conservatives scared of everything?
/u/Undeadfungas
Assuming this wasn’t a rhetorical question: Their brains are wired differently from liberals.
No seriously.
Recent studies have shown that self-identified conservatives tend, on average, to have larger amygdalae than self-identified liberals so.
The amygdala is an old brain structure, it’s been there since the beginning, and is primarily responsible for addressing feelings of fear, threat, and anxiety. When you’re in the middle of a hunt and the bushes next to you rustle, glare, and growl, it’s the amygdala that the rest of the brain looks to for advice: “Do I fight, fly, or freeze?”
From an evolutionary standpoint, the amygdala is a literal (not figurative) life saver. This could be described, partially, as the “shoot first, ask questions later” part of the human brain, and when one considers what early man had to deal with, shooting first was often the best plan available. “Is that other tribe of proto-humans friendly, or are they coming to kill me, steal my food, and rape my women? Better kill them first, just to be safe.” When one member of the, er, clan(?) wanted to travel east and look for better hunting, it was the other member, with the larger amygdala, who said “Hold on buddy, we’ve got plenty of food right here. Yeah, there might be mastodons over that hill, but there could also be angry mastodons over that hill. Is it really worth the risk?”
Now with that in mind, consider what Fox News and the right-wing media is feeding to their audience all day, every day: Fear. Pure, uncut, unadulterated fear.
Off the top of my head, we’ve got: Creeping sharia, the President is a muslim, terrorists are coming to Kansas, there’s a war on Christmas, liberals are coming to steal your guns, socialists are coming to steal your paycheck, secularists are coming to steal your bible, ebola, the knockout game, vicious mexicans spreading taco trucks, SJWs want to overturn the first amendment, your local mosque is a sleeper cell, globalists, Hillary Clinton literally murders people, feminism, the gay agenda, jazz, pedophiles in your daughter’s bathroom….. and it goes on.
Fox News markets fear and anxiety to people who are already predisposed to fear and anxiety! Then they end the segment with “Oh, and by the way, all those things you’re scared of are because of Democrats and Unions, the only thing that can protect you are Republicans and free market economics.”
I’ve said this before, but the right-wing media emotionally abuses their audience. They scare the shit out of their viewers and listeners with the intent of selling them products and politics. Who in the actual fuck needs a dozen modern firearms? (I’m not talking about the collector who has his great grandfather’s double barreled shotgun, I’m talking about the doomsday survivalist with 3 semi-automatic rifles for every member of the household, even little Timmy.) Scared people do. The NRA markets fear, Fox markets fear, Donald Trump’s “rapists, murderers, and drug dealers” Presidential campaign was exclusively built on and around fear. The entire Republican brand, simplistically explained as “Change is bad, better to stick to what we know,” is predicated on the fear (often times sincere) that trying something new could backfire.
Now here’s something to remember, a caveat of sorts: Just because the things Republicans are scared of (or are told to be scared of) are imaginary, doesn’t mean that the fear itself isn’t real. The emotional reaction many people feel at the prospect of “death panels” is a real emotion. That brings us to the biggest part of the problem, and why it’s so difficult to change people’s minds: Fear literally shuts down the reasoning center of the brain.
Ever watch a horror movie and wonder “Dude, why are you guys splitting up, why not just hide in the basement, why are you letting the black guy go into the house alone!?” In the case of movies stupid decisions like that are the result of lousy writing, in the case of the real world stupid decisions like that are the result of the amygdala telling the rest of the brain that you either need to run face first at the axe murderer, run away from the axe murderer, or stand in the middle of the room staring at the axe murderer because maybe he can only see you if you move, it’s only after the axe murderer doesn’t actually axe murder anyone that you might realize he’s wearing catsup on his face and his axe is made of foam rubber.
But remember what I was talking about before: “Maybe that tribe is friendly, or maybe they’re here to kill me”?
In the case of the conservative movement, in the case of the axe murderer, they’ve got a voice constantly whispering in their ear “No, the axe is real, there’s a real axe underneath the foam rubber, the catsup is camouflage, the people insisting that you’re looking at a guy in a halloween costume want you to die, and you can’t trust them, they hate you, they hate everything about you, nothing would make them happier than to see you killed by an axe murderer.” Listening to the right-wing media is like sticking an electrode right into the fear center of the brain, and poking it for eight hours a day, seven days a week, all year long.
So of course people are going to make irrational decisions: They’re being fed emotionally abusive lies (and I’m not being hyperbolic about that, either.) This is why I don’t feel quite the animosity toward Republican voters that many people do in the wake of President Trump’s election; if I consumed the right-wing media nonsense, I might vote for Donald Trump too. Or, to quote President Obama, “If I watched Fox news, I wouldn’t vote for me either.”

Now for some important disclaimers.
First of all an important reminder from neuroscience: “Neurons that fire together, wire together.” The human brain shapes itself, if I spend all day thinking about doughnuts, the part of my brain responsible for thinking about doughnuts will get stronger and more responsive; inversely people who have a stronger and more responsive part of the brain responsible for thinking about doughnuts are much more likely to spend all day thinking about doughnuts. It’s called neuroplasticity, and I just did a horrible job explaining it. Suffice it to say that we don’t know whether people with larger amygdala are more likely to express conservative opinions, or if people who express conservative opinions are more likely to develop larger amygdala. When it comes to the brain, we still don’t know whether the chicken or the egg came first.
Secondly, while I am not an -ologist of any sort, I am strongly of the opinion that in the absence of the right-wing media or extremist religions telling people what to be scared of and who to blame for their fears, the difference between liberal and conservative brains would not result in such different behavior and values… but that’s like doing a physics equation in a frictionless vacuum. I firmly believe that the aforementioned institutions are emotionally abusing their audiences for personal and institutional gain, pushing them to think and behave in ways they wouldn’t have arrived at on their own. (But then again, I’m an optimist.)
Finally, biological differences are not, in and of themselves, good or bad things, it’s only in context that something becomes good or bad. Nothing that I’ve written is intended to judge or belittle conservatives, none of it makes them better or worse than liberals, just different. Remember that you, and I, and everyone else on planet earth, are looking through social and cultural lenses, applying our own subjective values to objective reality. I don’t want anyone to see this as a condemnation of conservatism or conservatives, but I would be fine with everyone being pissed right the fuck off that the right-wing media is emotionally abusing our fellow citizens. There’s a reason I use the term “emotional abuse,” and I’ll stand by it till the end, they’re gaslighting our country, our friends, our families, for their own ends. Their behavior is unethical, it’s immoral, it’s abusive, and it needs to stop, period.
Edit: A bit more.

Everyone should read Umberto Eco’s Ur-Fascism essay (PDF but there are tons of other versions online). It is less than ten pages long and outlines in 14 points the features of a fascist society. Trump and his hardline followers tick off every checkbox on the list.
He also explains why fascist ideology is so incomprehensible:
Fascism was a fuzzy totalitarianism, a collage of different philosophical and political ideas, a beehive of contradictions. … The Fascist Party [here he means the Italians who defined fascism] was born boasting that it brought a revolutionary new order; but it was financed by the most conservative among the landowners who expected from it a counter-revolution. At its beginning fascism was republican. Yet it survived for twenty years proclaiming its loyalty to the royal family, while the Duce (the unchallenged Maximal Leader) was armin-arm with the King, to whom he also offered the title of Emperor. But when the King fired Mussolini in 1943, the party reappeared two months later, with German support, under the standard of a “social” republic, recycling its old revolutionary script, now enriched with almost Jacobin overtones.
The 14 points:
- Cult of tradition — anti-intellectual reversion to “revealed truth” — no learning allowed.
- Rejection of modernism and irrational appeal to the “old”
- Cult of action for action’s sake — thinking = emasculation — act now think later
- Disagreement is treason — criticism is a betrayal of traditional thought
- Fear of the other — exploits differences — inherently racist
- Angry middle class — economic crisis or fear of lower social groups — fascism historically appeals to this group — in US white majority is rapidly declining and growing angry…
- Obsession with identity and plot — we derive our identity only by finding enemies within & without who constantly plot against us
- Enemies are stronger & weaker, smarter & dumber — Jews run the world but are inferior, etc — “We are humiliated by their wealth & power, but they are weak and stupid so we shall take it from them”
- War is Life — until we defeat all our enemies in the final battle at the End of Days and attain our Utopia — see the Thousand Year Reich concept
- Contempt for the weak — there is a strict pecking order and everyone beneath me is worthless and deserves my contempt
- Cult of heroism — a heroic death is the reward for a heroic life in service to the State
- Machismo — real war is dangerous but I can avoid that and still be a hero by being a real man to the ladies…. Trump, “cuck!” etc
- Selective populism — The People are a prop only used for show, a monolithic entity expressing a common will interpreted by their leader while they cheer — “The People have no power so I will act for you” — Trump said “I alone can fix it”
- Newspeak — alternative facts….
Another interesting essay is Orwell’s Notes on Nationalism. It’s a bit more abstract but the basic ideas are still there.
- Nationalism is obsessed with superiority and focused on competitive prestige, is defined by instability and loyalty transfer (see alt-right folks who switch allegiances at the drop of a hat), and is characterized by power hunger and self-deception. It is militant loyalty ao any cause with the goal of universal expansion by force.
- “What remains constant in the nationalist is his state of mind: the object of his feelings is changeable and may be imaginary.”
- Uncertainty about objective truth makes it easier to cling to lunatic believes — some border on schizophrenia (cf Eco’s beehive of contradictions)
- Important: displays, names, appearances
- Not important: reason, facts, reality
- Motto: “My side is the best side no matter what”
- “I can’t lie because I’m always right” (see: Trump) — drives dopamine-fueled tribal blindness in followers
- Authoritarian minds seek identity through group membership — it’s not about the tribe its about the mindset — tribal loyalties can shift and the new loyalty can come with hatred of the previous group.
- History is a team sport. “We didn’t murder those people, we liberated the oppressed.”
- Most intellectual “revolutionaries” care more for perceived prestige than actual meaningful change.
- Competitive prestige leads to confirmation bias leads to unrealistic predictions (who should win)
Especially important in Orwell’s short essay is the concept of pseudo-intellectuals seeking salvation by switching loyalties suddenly and violently to preserve their public image and ego.
There is also a free book online by the foremost psychological researcher into the authoritarian mindset detailing numerous studies showing how the authoritarian mind actually works. He also blogs occasionally about the growing dark authoritarianism in the US. https://theauthoritarians.org/

2nd amendment absolutists tend to see the words gun control and quickly trot out the tired phrase “Well I’d support new policies, if anyone was proposing something that would actually work!” It’s the NRA infantry equivalent of thoughts and prayers, a way of pretending to support something, of pretending to do good, it’s rearranging the peas and mashed potatoes so it looks like you ate your vegetables.
Usually this is followed up by some variation of “The Democrat party only cares about feels, not reals!” and similar bullshit. So, for your consideration, here’s a list of “real things that would actually work,” may they serve you well in your arguments:
Firearm Laws and Firearm Homicides A Systematic Review
Findings We found evidence that stronger firearm laws are associated with reductions in firearm homicide rates. The strongest evidence is for laws that strengthen background checks and that require a permit to purchase a firearm. The effect of many of the other specific types of laws is uncertain, specifically laws to curb gun trafficking, improve child safety, ban military-style assault weapons, and restrict firearms in public places.
Findings: This study used an interrupted time series design to analyze changes in rates of homicide and firearm-related homicide. We found that the implementation of Florida’s stand your ground law was associated with a 24.4% increase in homicide and a 31.6% increase in firearm-related homicide.
The Relationship Between Gun Ownership and Firearm Homicide Rates in the United States, 1981–2010
Results: Gun ownership was a significant predictor of firearm homicide rates (incidence rate ratio = 1.009; 95% confidence interval = 1.004, 1.014). This model indicated that for each percentage point increase in gun ownership, the firearm homicide rate increased by 0.9%.
Mental illness and reduction of gun violence and suicide: bringing epidemiologic research to policy.
RESULTS: Media accounts of mass shootings by disturbed individuals galvanize public attention and reinforce popular belief that mental illness often results in violence. Epidemiologic studies show that the large majority of people with serious mental illnesses are never violent. However, mental illness is strongly associated with increased risk of suicide, which accounts for over half of US firearms-related fatalities.
Firearm legislation and firearm mortality in the USA: a cross-sectional, state-level study
31,672 firearm-related deaths occurred in 2010 in the USA (10.1 per 100,000 people; mean state-specific count 631.5 [SD 629.1]). Of 25 firearm laws, nine were associated with reduced firearm mortality, nine were associated with increased firearm mortality, and seven had an inconclusive association. After adjustment for relevant covariates, the three state laws most strongly associated with reduced overall firearm mortality were universal background checks for firearm purchase (multivariable IRR 0.39 [95% CI 0.23–0.67]; p=0.001), ammunition background checks (0.18 [0.09–0.36]; p<0.0001), and identification requirement for firearms (0.16 [0.09–0.29]; p<0.0001). Projected federal-level implementation of universal background checks for firearm purchase could reduce national firearm mortality from 10.35 to 4.46 deaths per 100,000 people, background checks for ammunition purchase could reduce it to 1.99 per 100,000, and firearm identification to 1.81 per 100,000.
Results: State laws that prohibit persons subject to IPV-related restraining orders from possessing firearms and also require them to relinquish firearms in their possession were associated with 9.7% lower total IPH rates (95% CI, 3.4% to 15.5% reduction) and 14.0% lower firearm-related IPH rates (CI, 5.1% to 22.0% reduction) than in states without these laws. Laws that did not explicitly require relinquishment of firearms were associated with a non–statistically significant 6.6% reduction in IPH rates.
TL;DR:
- Universal background checks for firearm purchases
- Universal background checks for ammunition purchases
- Requiring a permit to purchase a firearm
- Overturning ‘stand your ground’ laws (read the study before you get your panties in a bunch)
- Prohibiting individuals with a history of domestic violence from purchasing a firearm (and ammunition, presumably)
There ya’ go, five real, empirically proven ways to reduce firearm related deaths. For my own peace of mind, I’d throw comprehensive mental health care funding on the pile too, since suicides account for a large percentage of deaths (and yes, suicides do count! You’d be surprised how many people think they shouldn’t.) Of course on that same point, comprehensive mental health care funding really doesn’t need to be tied to firearms since it’s the right thing to do anyway, so maybe I’m just being redundant.
One of the biggest problems we face when it comes to gun control is that we’ve got patchwork laws across the nation. Many people like to point to Chicago and proclaim “Look, they have some of the toughest gun laws in the country, they also have some of the highest homicide rates in the country, checkmate!” …but less than half of the firearms used in Chicago were originally purchased in Illinois, the rest came from other states where gun laws are more relaxed and firearms are easier to acquire. Here in Maryland it’s pretty common for people to get their cigarettes in Virginia, because Maryland puts a hell of tax on them and Virginia doesn’t. Until firearm regulations are universal and cross state lines, until a straw buyer has to meet the same standards in every state in the union, and street criminals have to pass a background check to buy a box of ammunition, firearms will just flow following the path of least resistance.
A last thought before I go, another rhetorical trick of the NRA is to fall back on “Yes, but [that policy] wouldn’t have prevented [this shooting], so it’s a bad idea!” Don’t fall into that trap. We don’t need reactive gun policy in this country, we need proactive gun policy, how we could have prevented the last shooting is less important than how we can prevent the next one. Most shootings aren’t mass shootings, they’re suicides, they’re family killing family, they’re friends killing friends, that’s what the policies above are meant to help. I don’t know how to prevent mass shootings, but in this debate we cannot afford to narrow our view so tightly. Don’t let yourself be dragged into a rhetorical debate with shifting goal posts and a stable of wellbuts, the above is what we know works, that’s the whole scope of my post here “These are the policies that we know will reduce the rate of firearm homicides.” That’s all I can offer you today, unfortunately, those five reals.
Edit: A response to a some recurring rhetorical reasoning in the comments below, namely “Yes, but I have a right to keep and bear arms!” (I’m putting this in an edit since it doesn’t really fit into the “policies to reduce firearm related deaths” category, but does fit into the “reals” category.)
Prior to the Heller decision, 2nd amendment rights were weighed in the context of their usefulness in a militia, as specifically outlined in the 1939 US vs. Miller decision, quoted below:
(Emphasis mine, though I’d encourage you to read it in its entirety.)
If you want to learn more you can read Justice Steven’s and Justice Breyer’s respective legal dissents on the Heller decision, both of whom go into much more detail than I can here. Essentially, however, they make the same point that I am making: The individual right to keep and bear arms is a deviation from historical precedent and existing legal opinions.
Stated simply: The Heller decision was judicial activism, not constitutional interpretation.

Look no further than Shell Oil in Nigeria:
Shell Oil acting as a multinational global conglomerate and one of the largest companies on earth were paying bribes to government officials in Nigeria. They were paying the military to conduct raids on innocent protesters homes and ended up hanging innocent protest leaders in order to suppress the protesting against Shell.
My username is my attempt at education via a spoof on the Human Rights Abuses by Shell Oil in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
For more information about Shell in Nigeria, please look at the sources below.
http://www.theguardian.com/business/2010/dec/08/wikileaks-cables-shell-nigeria-spyinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Saro-WiwaThe oil giant Shell claimed it had inserted staff into all the main ministries of the Nigerian government, giving it access to politicians’ every move in the oil-rich Niger Delta, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable.
His death provoked international outrage and the immediate suspension of Nigeria from the Commonwealth of Nations, as well as the calling back of many foreign diplomats for consultation. The United States and other countries considered imposing economic sanctions.
Beginning in 1996, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), EarthRights International (ERI), Paul Hoffman of Schonbrun, DeSimone, Seplow, Harris & Hoffman and other human rights attorneys have brought a series of cases to hold Shell accountable for alleged human rights violations in Nigeria, including summary execution, crimes against humanity, torture, inhumane treatment and arbitrary arrest and detention. The lawsuits are brought against Royal Dutch Shell and Brian Anderson, the head of its Nigerian operation.[15]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiwa_family_lawsuits_against_Royal_Dutch_ShellThe United States District Court for the Southern District of New York set a trial date of June 2009. On 9 June 2009 Shell agreed to an out-of-court settlement of $15.5 million USD to victims’ families. However, the company denied any liability for the deaths, stating that the payment was part of a reconciliation process.[16] In a statement given after the settlement, Shell suggested that the money was being provided to the relatives of Saro-Wiwa and the eight other victims, in order to cover the legal costs of the case and also in recognition of the events that took place in the region.[17] Some of the funding is also expected to be used to set up a development trust for the Ogoni people, who inhabit the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.[18] The settlement was made just days before the trial, which had been brought by Ken Saro-Wiwa’s son, was due to begin in New York.[17]
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/oct/03/shell-oil-paid-nigerian-militaryOn June 8, 2009, Shell settled out-of-court with the Saro-Wiwa family for $15.5 million.[3][4] Ben Amunwa, director of the Remember Saro-Wiwa organization, said that “No company, that is innocent of any involvement with the Nigeria military and human rights abuses, would settle out of court for 15.5 million dollars. It clearly shows that they have something to hide”.[5]

Deposition of Eebu Jackson Nwiyon, a Mobile Police Force (MOPOL) soldier and Shell SPY (Shell supernumerary police) officer who served in Ogoni describes being told how his fellow soldiers were being paid by Shell, recounts boarding a Shell helicopter at a Shell installation with other heavily-armed soldiers. He recounts his superior being given a bulky envelope by Shell staff, which he assumes contained the cash allowances distributed to the soldiers shortly after. He is told by an officer that the Ogoni are being “taught a lesson” for resisting Shell. He recounts Major Okuntimo telling him that if they encounter any resistance to not “leave any of the persons alive.” https://web.archive.org/web/20111128235912/http://www.shellguilty.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/depo4.pdf
In this fax from Anderson to colleagues in London & the Hague, Anderson is aware that Shell’s most vocal critic, Saro-Wiwa, was likely to be found guilty by a military tribunal, 7 months before the sentencing. In Anderson’s words, the BHC believes that “although the charges [against Saro-Wiwa] should not stick, the government will make sure he is found guilty and then sentenced to death, and reprieved but incarcerated for a very long time”. The allegations have been known for some time, but thus far had not been substantiated with internal documents.
Shell called for military support from senior officials, even after the military forces had killed, tortured or raped many demonstrators.

Asked on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” who he talks with consistently about foreign policy, Trump responded, “I’m speaking with myself, number one, because I have a very good brain and I’ve said a lot of things.”
” … I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius….and a very stable genius at that!”

Where are the Republicans that have been saying how they support our troops?
u/Dionysus_the_Greek
Which side are they on?
The only side they’re on is the “Republican” side. If you look behind that, there’s nothing.
Republicans don’t care in the slightest about actual policies, or their supposed “principles”. They just care what the Party (and particularly Donald Trump) is in favor of at any given moment. Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that Democrats maintain fairly consistent opinions about policy, regardless of which party favors it, or who is in power.
The Party of Principles:

- Exhibit 2: Opinion of the NFL after large amounts of players began kneeling during the anthem to protest racism. Article for Context (viewing source data requires purchasing Morning Consult package)

- Exhibit 5: Opinion of “Obamacare” vs. “Kynect” (Kentucky’s implementation of Obamacare). Kentuckians feel differently about the policy depending on the name. Source Data and Article for Context

- Exhibit 7: White Evangelicals cared less about how religious a candidate was once Trump became the GOP nominee. (Same source and article as previous exhibit.)
- Exhibit 8: Republicans were far more likely to embrace a certain policy if they knew Trump was for it—whether the policy was liberal or conservative. Source Data and Article for Context
- Exhibit 9: Republicans became far more opposed to gun control when Obama took office. Democrats have remained consistent. Source Data and Article for Context
- Exhibit 10: Republicans started to think college education is a bad thing once Trump entered the primary. Democrats remain consistent. Source Data and Article for Context
- Exhibit 11: Wisconsin Republicans felt the economy improve by 85 approval points the day Trump was sworn in. Graph also shows some Democratic bias, but not nearly as bad. Source Data and Article for Context
- Exhibit 12: Republicans became deeply negative about trade agreements when Trump became the GOP frontrunner. Democrats remain consistent. Source Data and Article for Context
- Exhibit 13: 10% fewer Republicans believed the wealthy weren’t paying enough in taxes once a billionaire became their president. Democrats remain fairly consistent. Source Data and Article for Context
- Exhibit 14: Republicans suddenly feel very comfortable making major purchases now that Trump is president. Democrats don’t feel more or less comfortable than before. Article for Context (viewing source data requires purchasing Gallup’s Advanced Analytics package)
- Exhibit 15: Democrats have had a consistently improving outlook on the economy, including after Trump’s victory. Republicans? A 30-point spike once Trump won. Source Data and Article for Context
Donald Trump could go on a stage and start shouting about raising the minimum wage, increasing taxes on the wealthy, allowing more immigrants into the country, and combating climate change. His supporters would cheer and shout, and would all suddenly support liberal policies. It’s not a party of principles–it’s a party of sheep. And the data suggest that “both sides” aren’t the same in this regard. It’s just Republicans.
“Both parties are the same!”

I find it amusing whenever someone uses the argument “but not all republicans!”. You’re essentially asking us not to generalize the republican party with one stroke of brush but if you had one look at their voting history, you’d see the consistency they all have unanimously exhibited in ensuring that the policies that succeed are those which are detrimental to the vast majority of the non-rich population.
Source: https://np.reddit.com/r/news/comments/6brytw/justice_department_appoints_special_prosecutor/dhpcbdc/
So please tell me how the republican party shouldn’t be criticized for being a significant danger to the americans when their voting patterns exhibit EXACTLY that. Not to mention their mind boggling hypocrisy and lies to defend stripping healthcare which will kill millions. The scariest part is that this obvious two-faced nature implies that they are AWARE of the danger of their political views and YET push for them. I’d say that’s pretty clearly evil.
Note how there is no distribution in their votes. All of them fall in the party line.

like we are, mix #12
It just occurred to me that the latest version of my song “like we are” hasn’t yet been posted here of all places. So here’s the last working mix i was trying out. It’s still a work in progress. My main recording rig has been busted for a long while, so it’s been a year since i’ve done any work on it.
It’s A Big Deal for me because i wrote this song about twenty-five years ago (!!) but never really got to record it properly. IMHO, it’s my finest song, and for a long, long time it was kind of a personal travesty that i didn’t have it recorded.
I still have to add a guitar solo to it and do some more tweaking.
Best of Reddit Politics
In the coming weeks, i’m going to start a series of posts where i highlight great political content found on Reddit. The focus will be on well-sourced content; you’ll therefore be seeing names like u/poppinKREAM and u/MaximumEffort433 a lot.
The reason for this is two-fold:
- This blog has gotten no love from me for the past few years. Quite frankly, i needed a reason to come back and use this space. Most of my prior content has been mostly personal in nature and of no value and little interest to anyone outside of… well, me.
- The country in which i live — the United States of America — has gotten pretty crazy since the election of our
Supreme Godheadreality-challenged infantile bloated orange dope President Donald J. Trump. I’m just a person, but i do want to do something. If i can do nothing else, at least i can highlight and share interesting, important information.
Just to reiterate: this will be content not created by myself, but by various redditors. All the credit, and then some, goes to them. In fact, i’ll include a link to their profile & reddit submission/comment on each post. I’d encourage you to follow and upvote them, as well as absorb and share their comment.

suicide and love
(I’m sharing this here and on Twitter because out of all my social media presence, my blog and my Twitter is where i am read the least. I honestly don’t think anybody reads my blog or Twitter feed at all, whereas with Facebook it’s just embarrassing when i post deep sincere stuff and hear crickets.)
I’ve known several people who have committed suicide and it haunts and chills me even decades later. These were good people who touched my life and no doubt many, many others. I’ll just briefly talk about a few who hit me the hardest:
Mike Mettler was so funny and we invented bizarre dances and bantered forever. We skipped school (me, college; him, high school) together to see the Doors movie. We worked at a restaurant together. He was a king and i wish he were still here. #dishdogs4ever
Stacey Jo Hurt graduated early and sat next to me in study hall. I still have a folder she wrote on somewhere. I don’t recall what it said but it was disarming and when i run across it, i think of her and wish she had gone on to live a good life.
Bill White was a consummate musician. We fought a lot for some reason, but we were 100% brothers the last year i knew him, when we played in a band together and actually gave each other space and respect. He was far better than me on the guitar, but he chose drums and let me grow as a musician. I miss him.
It’s kind of not really a secret that i’m obsessed w/ death. As an atheist, i believe death is a rip-off and this one life is just staggeringly precious. It’s so short, and so improbable in the first place. We really should take advantage of our time to be good to each other NOW.
But i think about suicide a lot too. I wouldn’t say i’m a dire threat to myself (and certainly no threat to others). But almost every day i feel a despair about the human condition – and my own situation – that causes me to wonder if death wouldn’t be preferable.
The truth is that of all the different methods i’ve considered, none are appealing. In fact, i fear death quite a lot. I imagine it’s an uncomfortable process at best, especially if you’ve got some time between the point-of-no-return and lights out.
Yet i can’t help thinking about killing myself, nearly every day. And there’s plenty of great stuff i’d be leaving behind forever: my wife, who is just so amazing and smart and *hilarious* and generous and kind and beautiful and tough. My dogs, who are sweetness on four legs.
(I don’t need anybody coming to me with offers of help. I’m ok enough. And crippling, debilitating social anxiety makes that actually a little bit of a non-starter anyway. Honestly, i’d just be worse off by talking about it or engaging with people, even loved ones.)
Having said that, most people aren’t me… and some people have similar problems. So what to do if you’ve got a dear friend you care about who is showing signs of severe emotional distress? Are they even thinking that darkly? Should we chance embarrassing them? What to do?
I’m not sure i have any answers, even as somebody who considers themselves chronically – if marginally – suicidal. In my case, just leave me alone and i’ll probably be fine enough. But for others? Maybe just reach out and be a friend in normal, non-desperate ways.
“Hey, i was thinking about you the other day. How are things? Want to get together soon, you up for it?” Something like that, i’m thinking. I dunno. I mean, sometimes we don’t see any signs at all, and sometimes they’re there and we just don’t know how to approach the situation.
One thing i think that would help the most is for us as a culture to put to bed this whole habit of pressing people when they make mistakes or do something maybe less than perfect. From celebrities to Florida Man and the poor subjects of the “stupid criminal” trope, to people who may have different opinions or ideologies. Even if they believe stupid shit, like Flat Earth. And especially people who were in viral videos for embarrassing reasons.
Speaking of virality, people who share hoax stories need to stop. Outrage porn is a real thing, and it’s very, very often targeting people who have no relation to the “story” in the meme. We need to think before throwing shade or belittling others.
We need to STOP throwing so much shade around. We need to STOP making fun of each other. We need to STOP making selfish decisions that affect the lives of strangers negatively. We need to think more about ways to HELP each other up, instead of how to KICK each other DOWN.
(Except in the case of Nazis. Always punch Nazis.)
I admit, right here, right now, i am guilty of not Doing the Right Thing. Very frequently. But i am going to start thinking about ways to make this world and this life and this era and this society LESS awful. MORE friendly. I’m going to TRY to be BETTER. Because i hurt too.
And i don’t want others to hurt like i do, or hurt like they do, or hurt like anybody hurts. I want people to feel good again in general. I want people to have the emotional space and freedom to further the progress of humanity. Everybody can be a solution.
They just need to be enabled. They need less worry. We all need less to worry about. How about a world with few worries? How about pushing FORWARD? Instead of pulling back? So let’s lay off and give each other emotional freedom to be able to skip all the bullshit and live+++
i guess my thesis here is stupidly simple: “love each other”
corny, but true
